The brain requires a slow and steady stream of glucose or blood sugar. This is supplied by food as you digest it. The glucose goes into your bloodstream and is pumped up to your brain by your heart.

The important factor is that the stream of glucose is slow and steady. This keeps the brain working at a high level. Just as an expensive car needs a high grade of petrol to keep it purring along. If it doesn’t get it, it starts to cough, splutter and even stop running. So your brain needs that slow, steady stream of glucose in order to work well and keep on working well. The problems start when you eat the wrong types of food. Some foods, as you digest them, give a sudden surge of glucose and then it drops. Most people like these type of foods because the surge makes them feel good. They feel great, they are happy and they can think better. Then the surge fades away. The types of foods that cause this problem are sugary, high calory, highly processed foods. If you eat biscuits, white bread, processed breakfast cereals, sweets, sugary desserts and other processed carbohydrates all day long, your blood sugar levels  of glucose will go up and down. Your performance, energy level and mood go up and down to match your glucose levels. You will feel tired, depressed and miserable.

The remedy for all this is to follow a healthy diet. One which will give you the ability to handle stress, to work well and feel good all day, every day. You must eat food that gives a strong, steady stream of blood sugar. This will keep you energised, thinking good and feeling great all day long.
