Happiness And Money
If you want to be Happy, having money isn’t the most important thing. Depression is the main cause of  unhappiness and not a lack of money.

How much money you get only has a small direct affect on on how happy you feel. According to Lord Richard Layard, of the London School of Economics, in an article in the Metro. Some quotes from the story are given below in italics:

Metro: Size of salary has only a small effect on our overall wellbeing, according to a report which claims to offer the first complete snapshot of the nation’s happiness. Income matters but it’s not the only thing that matters,’Poor mental health can reduce life expectancy at the same rate as smoking – is highlighted as one of the biggest issues affecting the nation’s happiness.

As I have said, in many, many articles, Depression, not poverty, is the enemy of true Happiness. Some people are rich and unhappy, others are poor but happy. To put it another way, some people are rich AND depressed. Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m NOT saying that you should be poor if you want to be happy. The aim of The Happy People is to never be depressed AND have money. And these are two different aims. At present, we are working on getting rid of depression and building up Happiness.
There is been lots of studies of poor countries where the people are very happy. More so than in the rich countries. These studies show different areas of life, rather than wealth, which can produce much happiness. These people do not get depressed about their poverty. You can use these areas to make improvements in your mental health BUT money, used the right way, can also bring lots of Happiness.
You must always be working on ways of building up the amount of Happiness in your life AND the amount of money in your bank account.

Children And Happiness

Metro: And ‘emotional health’ in childhood is singled out as the most important factor in adult wellbeing.‘It has a major influence on children’s subsequent success – their relationships, physical health

I take it that by this they are talking about children having  ‘a happy childhood’. If you consider yourself one of The Happy People, and I cannot emphasise this enough, you have the sacred duty to make sure that EVERY child that you are hear of, know or are responsible for is protected from abuse, nurtured to full healthy development and is Happy. There must be no weakening on this. It is your full duty and fully affects your KARMIC balance more than anything I know of. A depressed child is a sin against nature. KARMA knows what you should do and what you fail to do. if you truly want to be one of The Happy People, don’t fail this duty.

Metro:  and whether they can get a good job,’ said Lord Layard. The Measuring National Wellbeing report was ordered by the government. New data will be collected each year and taken into account alongside traditional economic measures of prosperity.

They said this last year but I’ve seen no evidence, have you?

Metro: Lord Gus O’Donnell, of the Cabinet Office, said the new approach could ‘revolutionise’ policy-making – but work was needed to turn the report’s findings into practical ideas.

This blog has 300 articles. All full of good, practical ways to be Happier. Don’t wait for the government. Start to study the articles NOW!  LOL!

Back soon, Love,Peace and Happiness,

Depression! The Alarming Truth! The number of people who are looking help because they are depressed is 7 times more than what what it was 40 years ago! Let me repeat that. For every victim of depression 40 years ago there are now 7. It is truly alarming!
What Is Depression?
It can effect people at different levels of intensity. It can be weak and short lasting or it can grind you down to feeling suicidal and last for years.
Think about this. A person can be told that they have terminal cancer. They often battle on right up to the end in spite of dreadful pain and suffering. Another can have an attack of depression and after a short time, commit suicide. This, to me, indicates that depression can be more serious in some cases than cancer. Lots of cases of cancer can be cured, suicide can not.
What Can You Do About It?
For our purpose and to keep it simple I am going to suggest describing depression as a lack of  Happiness. This gives you a way to approach it. When you depressed you are having bad feelings that have different levels of intensity and lasting. If you can start having happy feelings, those depressing feelings will be weakened. And if your happy feelings continue and get stronger, your depression will fade away. You may think that this is a bit too simple to deal with something that can be as serious as depression, and I wouldn’t blame you. It is only for the lower levels of depresion. And that means a lot of the people who suffer mild depression can benefit from this. If your depression is occasional and not too bad you are one of the peopel that can change your life around.  So what you must do is become a happy person.
What Is Happiness?
1) The amount of Happiness in your life can be divided into two areas.
A)Your present and your future. Nearly half of your Happiness in life comes from your attitudes and what you do in your daily life. This is mainly the people you mix with i.e spouses, the opposite sex, families and your community.
B) Your genetics and your past life. The rest it is down to your genetics and how you were brought up. And, of course, the unhappiness and depression in your life caused by these factors A) and B).  We, The Happy People, are always looking for ways to build up these areas of your life.
Here is the basic plan for beating depression. For area A), your present and future life, you must learn how to change your attitudes, how you mix with people and what you do so that your life becomes full of Happiness. And how to avoid the ways that people fall into unhappiness.  If B), your past life is a problem area, if you have had a particularly unhappy upbringing and life up until now, you must free yourself from any baggage that has built up. What you learned from parents and teachers may have puts lots of  unhelpful beliefs in your head or caused you unhappiness and to have bad memories. These have to be got rid of. Otherwise they can stop you from moving forward into a really happy lifestyle.
Two of the best ways  your pastto get rid of baggage from are:-
a) Meditation. This is very successful, but it must be the right kind of  meditation. Unfortunately, most of the popular types being taught are not suitable. All meditation is good, but this is a specialized area and needs a special approach.
b) Again a specialized, advanced NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) technique called Clearing Up Personal History.

Happier, Smarter And Fitter? Here’s How!

Who Wants To Be Happier, Smarter And Fitter!
The Happy People already know about this stuff but it is nice to know that the experts are proving it to be true. Here is a great article about it. There is a link to it at the bottom of this post. Make sure that you read it. If you are not already one of the Happy People, it could get you started on a new life. It could make you HAPPIER, SMARTER and FITTER. And you’d like that, wouldn’t you? Of course you would! That’s the great thing about doing this stuff. It’s so much fun once you get started.
I don’t think anybody really needs any help about how to get started doing light exercise. (If you are not already exercising, you should start off on a light routine) But perhaps you may like to know how to become one of The Happy People?
Would You Like To Be One?
Here are three great arguments for being one.
1) It’s EASY
2) It’s FREE and
3) You will become HAPPIER person!
Three great reasons, aren’t they? I can’t think of better ones, can you? LOL!
Here’s How To Be One
Just decide to be one! LOL! That’s how easy it is. You are now one of us but now you must behave in certain ways. You must start thinking, talking and doing things in a new ways. Happiness is often a choice and you must learn how make that choice. You will learn how by studying this blog and  by exploring the material that is published there or recommended (such as this article)
Here are sections from the article plus my comments in italics:

 Happier, Smarter And Fitter

You already know that exercise will help improve your fitness level, can reduce your risk for chronic disease, and can help slim your waistline. But did you also know that getting the recommended amount of daily physical activity may also make you smarter and happier?

ME:  The Happy People know that.

Three studies add to the multitude of research that proves you really should make time in your busy schedule for at least 30 minutes each and every day.

ME:  30 minutes is a longish stretch. Make sure you keep it light, as I said above. Three 10 minutes sessions a day is a good way to start. I won’t go on about it because there are beginners’ exercise programmes everywhere. I only mention it because so many beginners overdo it.START OFF LIGHT!

William Killgore PhD and Zachary Schwab BS, of the McLean Hospital at Harvard University, asked 25 healthy adult men and 28 women from the Boston area to report on their weekly exercise habits and then take a test known as the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence. At least for the women surveyed, those who exercised more frequently each week had higher intelligence scores.
“Overall, these findings suggest that physical exercise is significantly related to relatively stable intellectual capacities among healthy adults,” the authors wrote in the journal Perceptual and Motor Skills.

While in this small study, the relationship between physical exercise and measured intelligence was most evident for women, there is no reason to believe that men would achieve similar mental benefits from putting in a workout each day.

ME:  Other  bigger reports show that men do achieve similar mental benefits from a workout each day.

Another recently released study found that people who exercise may be better protected from age-related changes in the brain, particularly for elderly adults. Participants in a study published by the University of Edinburgh found that people over 70 who exercised regularly showed less brain shrinkage over a three-year period than those who did little exercise. Brain shrinkage is linked to problems with memory and thinking. The researchers found that in the brain’s white matter – the wiring that transmits messages through the brain – was less damaged in those who exercise. Additionally, grey matter, the part of the brain with nerve cell bodies, was also greater in volume.

ME: More good news. There are lots of my blog posts covering this.

Dr Alan Gow of the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology who led the research, said, “Our results suggest that to maintain brain health, physical activity may be more beneficial than choosing more sedentary activities. Increasing physical activity – even a short walk each day – can only be encouraged.”
Professor James Goodwin, Head of Research at Age UK added, “This research re-emphasizes that it really is never too late to benefit from exercise, so whether it’s a brisk walk to the shops, gardning or competing in a fun run it is crucial that, those of us who can, get active as we grow older.”

ME:  Again, I repeat, it is very important for beginners to start off light!

Not only will that boost in activity help your brain stay young and active, it can also lift your mood after a hard day. Researchers with Penn State found that exercise really does make people happier.

Jaclyn Maher, a graduate student in kinesiology, studied men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 – a period in life when people appear to be most dissatisfied. “”Emerging adults are going through a lot of changes; they are leaving home for the first time and attending college or starting jobs. As a result, their satisfaction with life can plummet,” explains Maher.

The participants were divided into two groups who made diary entries either every eight days or every 14 days. The volunteers were assessed for their personality and took questionnaires asking about happiness levels and life satisfaction. They also reported on physical activity levels during the study period.

“We found that people’s satisfaction with life was directly impacted by their daily physical activity,” said Maher. “The findings reinforce the idea that physical activity is a health behavior with important consequences for daily well-being and should be considered when developing national policies to enhance satisfaction with life.”

ME:  So the people who were tested were in a highly stressed out stage of their life and it worked for them. People who are not under so much stress as these students would be  would get even better results. Please note that by ‘enhance satisfaction with life’ they mean felt happier! LOL1

“Based on these findings, we recommend that people exercise a little longer or a little harder than usual as a way to boost satisfaction with life,” said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology.

The CDC recommends 150 minutes each week, which sounds like a lot of time, but it doesn’t have to be accomplished all at once. Try doing a moderate intensity or vigorous workout for just 10 minutes at a time a couple of times a day. The benefits will add up, both physically and mentally

ME:  And, of course, join The Happy People. A great way of getting Happiness is to share it with other people. Get this bonus right now! Share this post with all your friends. Make them into Happy People.LOL!

Get Happy, Ready For The Winter!

English: Mixed nuts and dried fruit

Happiness, You And Winter!
You should be Happy all year round, but nature and your body tend to work against that. The shorter days and lack of sunshine make lots of changes in your body. It slows down your production of certain hormones. This can make you feel tired, sluggish and even depressed. It is called SAD (seasonal affective disorder) Now The Happy People never want to feel like that!. So, if you want to be one of The Happy People, what can you do about that?
Well, here are some of the problems and 5 ways to help you beat them and

smiley happy people

smiley happy people (Photo credit: madhavaji)

stay Happy
1) Happiness And The Winter Blues!
In Winter, the days are shorter. Missing out on sunlight, can cause SAD and this can cause mental dullness, depression and feelings of tiredness. Some people are strongly affected by SAD and others are hardly aware of it. If you are affected by it you should get out into the daylight for at least half an hour a day. This should be when the light is at it’s strongest Usually this is between 6am and  1opm. I’ll just repeat that:- outdoors, for at least half an hour, between 6am and 10pm.
This will help you beat SAD by resetting your bodyclock . If you can do some fitness training in the morning as well, that is great. Even if you have to get up half an hour earlier. This will lift your energy levels for the rest of the day and get your endorphin(Happiness) hormone pumping around your body up to seven hours afterwards.
2) Winter Happiness Diet!
In the winter, the body produces less of the Happiness hormone, Serotonin. The Happy People (You and Me. LOL) are always looking for ways to increase Serotonin, not to cut back on it! This is because it makes us feel so good! Because of this need we tend to eat more carbs. Cut down on the naughty white carbs like pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. These will put pounds on you and are the reason why so many people put weight on in the winter months. Instead eat low calorie carbs such as Swedes, carrots, sweet potatoes etc.
The body makes serotonin from a chemical called tryptophan, which is in foods such as dairy products, fish, bananas, dried dates, soya, almonds and peanuts. Combining tryptophan-rich foods with wholegrain carbs – such as brown rice, wholemeal bread or oats – helps the body release insulin, which boosts the amount of tryptophan available for your body to use.The bonus is that you will not put on that winter bloat and have to try to lose it next summer. And that will be a BIG happiness bonus LOL
P.S Don’t forget your iron intake. Eat red meat, fish, eggs, bread, fortified breakfast cereals, pulses, green leafy vegetables and dried fruit.
3) Get A Life!
Don’t stay in. Get out and meet or visit friends a few nights a week. Join a gym or club of some sort.  Don’t let the dark nights keep you indoors.
4) Set Yourself A Target!
Plan some area of your life. Learn a new language, perhaps for your next holiday. lose weight, get fitter, stop  smoking, start dance classes. Dancing is a great activity, if you really want to become one of The Happy People. It exercises your whole body, brings a tremendous flow of all the Happiness Hormones and gets you in touch with the opposite sex. It cannot be beaten for Happiness training, pure exercise and social grouping. I dance as much as I can. You can get as high as a kite without abusing alcohol.
5) Keep Your Sex Life Buzzing!
In the Summer you have high levels of the Happiness Hormones  serotonin and dopamine, and of the sex hormone testosterone, putting you in the mood for love. Everybody feels sexier in the Summer because of this. This is why all those sunshine holidaymakers act the way they do. And why not? If you  are not in a relationship, get one now. You’ll feel happier, I guarantee it! LOL It’ll give you something to do on those dark nights.
6) Walking With Nature!
Recent research shows that walking in a city increases depression but walking in the open outdoors will boost your mood, give you Happy feeling and increase you feelings of well being. So get out in the open as much as possible. you’ll feel better for it. I prefer  to walk at the sea side or by a river because the ozone level is higher and this makes me feel great.
Staying Happy!
So there you have 6 ways to beat the Winter blues.
Here in the U.K we have had a really horrible, dreadful, depressing summer .Many, many people tell me how down they are. And I can also see and hear even more people just by observation. Do not waste any time! Start the programme as soon as possible. This is Happiness you are losing out on.
The one thing that you must never ever waste. You have probably missed out on lots of Happiness in your life. This is the time for you to change all that. You are going to reach your two hands into the Happiness bucket and take out as much as you can. And keep on reaching in and taking out.LOL
Don’t worry, you’ll never miss out on any more. I’ll teach you how to do it.
The day you start the above programme could be the most important day in the rest of your life
BECAUSE
the plan is EVERGREEN. The plan itself is not seasonal. It will work in the Summer as well as in the Winter. If you start on it now, you will be in full flow when Winter comes. You will be bubbling with a high level of Happiness. AND when you see the Summer sunshine you will continue with the plan and hit an even higher level of Happiness.
This is not all talk or wishful thinking. It is all stuff that the scientists are proving by pooling research done in Universities, laboratories and out in the streets   in many, many tests all over the world. The amazing results come from being able to pool all the  results using computes. Here are some others things that you can do.

The Way T0 Happiness!
You are reading this because you want to know how to get Happiness in your life. This blog will show you how to do it in ways that are easy to understand, easy to use and easy to stick with. I guarantee that if you follow the simple ideas and lessons on this blog site you will lift your lifestyle to levels of positivity that you presently think are impossible.
I like to think that a simple way to do it is to plan lots of big enjoyable events into your life and, at the same time to plan an everyday steady flow of  medium and small pleasures to indulge yourself with.
This can be a problem. Lots of people, so they tell me, that you can get bogged down with unimportant but downbeat things that just seem to catch you up, and wear you down.
A simple way to increase the Happiness in your life is to cut down on these small irritating things. A lot of the things that make you feel good in everyday life are very ordinary. A sunny day, meeting a friend who is upbeat, finding money in the pocket of something you haven’t worn for a while, a quiet cup of coffee, a good book are small, small things that make you feel good. You can start putting more of these into your life easily, but what do you do about the things that stop your flow? How do you put an end to all those small, stressful, everyday depressing problems? Here is a sound way to do it!
5 Easy Steps To Happiness!
1) Chunk Your Happiness Target Down!
First let me ask you:-
How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time!
When you have a big job to do, you break it down into smaller, easy to handle chunks. So you first of all make a list of all the items that stop you being Happy. Things that you will take out of your life. Things that are causing you Unhappiness. Stop worrying, stop mixing with depressing people, stop substance abuse and stop leading such a depressing lifestyle, etc, etc. The list can be as long as you like. Put everything on it. Break some of them into smaller chunks.Make a list of all the depressing people that you want to avoid by name.Make a list of each and every one of the things that you think are causing your depressing lifestyle.Go over the list, make it bigger. And again. This is a journey of self discovery. It could be a turning point in your life. Keep adding to it
2) Keep A Happiness Notebook!
This is a very important part of your plan. It will enable you to know what you are moving away from, what you should be doing right now and where you want to go.It will be a record of how you went from being a deadbeat to a high liver. A lot of very successful people that I have read about and met had this in common. They put a lot of time into keeping a notebook, diary or log. Start today, work on a piece of paper,  buy a notebook tomorrow and start using it. I repeat, start today, work on a piece of paper, buy a notebook tomorrow and start using it. That notebook is like a car, sometimes a bit of a nuisance but that notebook, just like a car, will help you to get to where you want to go, quickly and easily. DO IT!
Happiness Details!
What do you put in your Happiness Notebook?
First you have the list(s) mentioned in 1) above. Then you make a shorter list of all of the items on it that would make important differences in your life. Study them.
4) Nice And Easy Does It!
After studying the list carefully, pick which one of the important ones would be the EASIEST to stick with. Study this list and pick which one of these is the easiest of them to do. This is the one and only one that you will be working on at present. Don’t try to be clever! Chunk this down even more by writing down when, where and how often you will be doing or stopping doing this. Perhaps you can chunk this part down some more i.e just doing it at certain times, in certain places and certain number of times.
Please take note, this is very important, the whole point is to make this part EASY. You must start off at a level that is easy.
If you want to start running marathons, you do not go in for a marathon tomorrow.
You start by running around the block first. Then, as you get stronger…….
Getting a happier lifestyle is a complicated procedure. It shouldn’t be, but sometimes at the beginning, it can be. You must start it off simple and easy. When you have some experience, when you have had some success, then you can go for the big ones! LOL.
Don’t worry, you will have a lot of fun when you get started. Just imagine how much you will have when you are up and running for a while.
Start working on this area NOW! As I said above, start today, work on a piece of paper, buy a notebook tomorrow and start using it.
5) The Next Happiness Target!
Keep working on this area until you think that you have mastered it. Then, and only then, pick the next one of the items on your list that would make important differences in your Happiness. Again look for the easiest to do. Start working with this one.

Get Happiness? Stop Daydreaming! Part 3

More Happiness Facts!

Shortly after finishing  writing Get Happiness? Stop Daydreaming! Part 2 (and Part 1), I came across this excellent article (Find links to these in Related Articles section below). This article gives a more realistic view of how long it takes to get really amazing results using Meditation to add to your enjoyment of life, your  Happiness and your health, both mental and physical.
Here are some interesting excerpts in italics and my comments.

Yi-Yuan Tang said that meditation helps the brain stay organized.

Yi-Yuan Tang said that meditation helps the brain stay organized.

What does it take to become a better thinker? Do you need to meditate for hours and engage in gruelling cognitive training? Or could the path to a healthy mind be as simple as walking 40 minutes a day? At a symposium on training, performance, and neuroplasticity at the 24th APS Annual Convention in Chicago, three researchers presented their own methods for improving cognition and for tightening the neural circuits that underlie an efficient mind.

APS Fellow and symposium chair Yi-Yuan Tang, from Texas Tech University, began by discussing his work on integrative body-mind training (IBMT), a meditation technique that he and his colleagues have adapted from traditional Chinese medicine. IBMT combines physical and mental relaxation techniques, “because you really need to train the body to train the mind,” Tang explained. Using detailed fMRI analysis, Tang has been able to pinpoint the neural changes that underlie meditation-induced improvements in mood and cognitive performance.

Me: The Body-Mind connection is at the core of the Taoist and Zen (both words mean Meditation) principles that I use and teach. Tang has used brain scanning to prove this to be true and to show that meditation increases Happiness.

Many studies on the effects of meditation examine lifelong meditators who have thousands of hours of practice under their belts, but Tang found positive effects in students who performed IBMT for less than a week.

Me:- This is what I was seeing on my classes 40 years ago. I wrote this in Get Happiness? Stop Daydreaming! Part 2.

After 20 minutes of meditation a day for five days, the students demonstrated improvements in their conflict-resolution abilities and creative problem solving skills, as well as decreased blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Me:- Which means a reduction in stress.

Tang found that patients who had been practicing IBMT longer (two to four weeks) had increased blood flow to the anterior cingulate cortex and insular striatum, two brain regions associated with self-regulation. Additionally, these brain areas had increased white-to-gray matter ratios, suggesting that the detectable changes associated with meditation might be mediated by increased networking in these areas.

Me:- The researchers I mentioned in parts 1  and 2 were talking about people with thousands of hours of Meditation training/study. At a normal level of 30 minutes a day these researchers were talking about training for about twelve years while waiting for a good result.
The researchers proved lots of good results but were completely adrift in this area. The people whom this research is supposed to help are not looking to learn the Buddhist, Hindu or Sikh religion. They are mostly unhappy, depressed or dysfunctional and are looking for tools of change that work and do not carry lots of baggage. Baggage they do not need or want. This surplus baggage is why they are talking about thousands of hours of training. Not the 2 to 4 weeks of 30 minutes a day that Tang and I are talking about.
Thousands of hours! What an unbelievable waste of time if you are desperate for quick but real results.
Don’t get me wrong. Religion will give some people some help and happiness. But the right type of clean, pure meditation will completely change most people. If you are looking for Happiness that you can use to move your life forward and the strong, agile and flexible mind that will allow you to grow and use that Happiness then you must choose carefully. If you are looking for therapeutic tools of change choose a Meditation that is not a part of a religion.
Why not Join The Happy People? It’s FREE and you can use the nearly 300 blog posts that will help you make the changes that you want in your life. Even if you never join The Happy People, you can read the blog LOL. We are here to make friends not money.

Me:- There is a vast amount of information in the article, including:

……..changes in brain structure ……….Participants’ brains, in effect, were becoming more organized through meditation.

APS Fellow Randall W. Engle, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, focused on a different method for mental improvement. He developed a cognitive training strategy designed to enhance working memory capacity.

Me:- The more powerful your brain, the better you can use it for Meditation and building Happiness.

Using arduous memory tests (and generous financial compensation),……..Of course, training can have impressive returns, especially when participants are paid for performing better.
……APS Fellow Kramer’s research suggests a physical workout could improve memory. In adults aged 59 to 80, Kramer found that walking 40 minutes a day, three times a week, helped to reverse the effects of age on brain circuits involved in attention and decision making.

Art Kramer found that walking could help reverse the effects of aging.

Art Kramer found that walking could help reverse the effects of aging.
However, the deterioration of these networks might be reversible through exercise. Kramer asked two groups of self-identified “couch potatoes” to spend a year either walking or stretching three times a week and used fMRI to monitor the strength of brain networks at the beginning of the study, after six months, and after a year. The results were promising. The walking group improved their performance on cognitive tasks and increased the strength of certain brain networks, even to the point in which their brains resembled the brains of much younger people. Kramer also observed increases in hippocampus volume, measures of neural organization, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the walking group.

Me:- Great stuff!

The finding that exercise helps cognition is not new, but Kramer’s attention to the strengthening of networks suggests that the effects of exercise might be based in the same decision-making networks that allow us to play video games.

What can we learn from these disparate lines of research? Taken together, they suggest that cognitive training alone isn’t the secret to improving cognitive function. Instead, strengthening the connections between body and mind through meditation and walking may be the key to a better brain.

Me:- Why take chances? Do as I do! Do cognitive exercise ( Crosswords, Sudoku, etc. ), exercise and meditate. And of course, lots of Happiness training!

What Matters in Training?

“Everyone gets training,” says APS Fellow Eduardo Salas, a psychological scientist from the University of Central Florida. “But what matters? What works? What influences learning and skill acquisition?”

Me:- Or what training works and gives improved results? The answer is generative training. Training where the skills you get enable you to train even better. And that better training gives you even better results. You are involved in an upward spiral of more and more improvement (This is an advanced level of NLP). This plan is not infinite. You can’t keep it up for ever. Or can you?

Happiness, Mental Health And Meditation!
Hi! Here is the post I promised you. It’s a follow on to my last post. As in my previous post, “Get Happiness? Stop Daydreaming!” I’m talking about Meditation being used as a way of stopping the negative thought patterns that emerge when we allow our brains to ‘Day-dream‘. In other words how to increase your Happiness. Here is another article (Link at bottom of post) which links strongly into the previous along with my comments. Again I have put excerpts from the article in italics.

Meditation can shut off the part of the brain associated with daydreaming as well as autism, schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders, according to a Yale study released Monday.

Me:- Here are more reasons why you should meditate. It helps with lots of mental disorders.

Experienced meditators ……… can quiet the brain region known as the default mode network, which consists of the medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex. This region of the brain is responsible for lapses in attention.

Me:- The lapses in attention, or daydreaming is when the mind quite often drifts into negative ways of thinking that, again, often makes them sad, troubled or depressed i.e it stops them being Happy.

The researchers, led by Judson Brewer, an assistant professor of psychiatry, analyzed the brain activity of 24 meditators — half with thousands of hours of practice and half who were novices — with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
For the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the participants took part in three meditation exercises and their brain activity was recorded for 4 1/2 minutes. In all three exercises, the experienced meditators were able to deactivate the default mode network. The novices, however, did not change the activity in this brain region.

Me:-This has not been my experience at all. I have taught thousands of people how to meditate. Some, and I admit only a tiny ‘some,’ have had a tremendous result after one or two classes. I’m talking about mental state, positive emotions and even direction in life. And these results were permanent. To suggest that people need thousands of hours to  achieve these great results is not what I know can happen.
This gives a bad impression and would stop people from trying this marvellous therapy. I feel is because all the new research that I read about is about using types of  meditation that is linked to a spiritual or religious agenda.

The researchers also conducted brain imaging of the subjects with their minds at rest. Even when they weren’t meditating, the study found that the brain activity of the experienced meditators was different.. ………

Me:- I agree. If people carry on meditating, they will carry on making improvements in these skills and results.

he said, their brains were constantly suppressing urges to daydream or indulge in thoughts focused on themselves. A preoccupation with one’s own thoughts….. is a trait of such disorders as autism and schizophrenia. Brewer said more research is needed to say whether this means that meditation could ward off these disorders or be used to treat them, but he added that the results are promising. The results also suggest that meditation could help treat depression. Brewer cited earlier studies. If meditation can train the mind to focus, Brewer said, it could increase a sense of well-being.

Me:- I agree thoroughly. I would also repeat that some people show good improvement in the first couple of classes, most are doing it after 10 session and the longer they carry on meditating the stronger they will become mentally. I am talking about 30 minutes a day.

A meditator himself, Brewer said he wasn’t surprised that his study revealed the positive effects of meditation. “You get these delayed benefits that are really remarkable,” he said. “You’re less stressed, and hopefully you’re less of a jerk.”Brewer said many of his patients who struggle with nicotine addiction have successfully used meditation to kick their habits.
Earlier studies have shown that the mind wanders a fair amount. Researchers at Harvard published a study earlier this year that found up to 47 percent of our waking hours are devoted to daydreaming (http://bit.ly/dtZPhj, abstract only). So it’s no surprise that it has become a popular subject of study among neuroscientists.

Me:- More reasons to start meditating as soon as you can.

Earlier this year, for instance, a study out of Wake Forest University School of Medicine found that meditation was more effective at reducing pain than drugs, including morphine (http://bit.ly/fLnHKk, abstract only).

Me:- Even more reasons! LOL!

Fadel Zeidan of the department of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest, that study, said that the findings of the Yale study were plausible. While the Yale research focused on experienced meditators, Zeidan said, his study found that people could reap benefits after practicing meditation for only four days. The more studies on meditation are published, he said, the more the medical establishment will accept meditation as a form of treatment.

Me:- Exactly what I have found. The type of meditation that I do and teach has absolutely no spiritual or philosophical content at all. I believe in philosophy and spirituality but not in connections with my meditation. My type of meditation is an exercise to make my mind strong, healthy and fast moving. It is used to bring high levels of Happiness into my life.
Professor Brewer said that it would help to cure depression and he is right. It is the perfect way to bring Happiness into your life. And as you carry on, to make it stronger. When you start meditating, you will soon find that you get that feeling of  Happiness after a session. But make sure that it is the right type of Meditation for getting what you want.

What’s Stopping You?
Everybody wants to be Happy. Here is an excellent article about Happiness. It points out things that cause unhappy thoughts and feelings. It  covers the causes but it doesn’t tell you how to put things right. On this blog The Happy People work on how to prevent unhappiness and how to build Happiness in your life. To do this we use use Behaviour Modification, the latest Neuroscience research and Neuro Linguistic Programming. That is a bit of a mouthful, isn’t it? But don’t be put off. We also use Meditation.
Meditation is one of the simplest and easiest and most powerful tools you can use to get rid of unhappy feelings and replace them with Happiness.
Who Leads The Happy People?
I have been Meditating for more than 40 years. I officially registered Liverpool’s first Meditation Church 30 years ago, so I know how Meditation can lead you to a happier life. I am also a Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming.
So What Is Stopping Me Being Happy?
I have put some excerpts from the article below in italics. Make sure that you read the full article. There is a link to it at the bottom of the article.
One of the problems of building up a Happy lifestyle is that you (and everybody else) has great difficulty in focussing on what you want and staying focussed. Meditation is perfect for this and the other tools I mentioned above work with it perfectly.
This article was written by two top men men from Harvard University in America. The research done was wide and well conducted.

People spend 46.9 percent of their waking hours thinking about something other than what they’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes them unhappy………..
“A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” Killingsworth and Gilbert write.
Unlike other animals, humans spend a lot of time thinking about what isn’t going on around them: contemplating events that happened in the past, might happen in the future, or may never happen at all. Indeed, mind-wandering appears to be the human brain’s default mode of operation.

Me: As I said above, one of the methods that the Happy People use to build Happiness is Meditation. We have other ways that do not use Meditation but Meditation is so easy to learn and do. The type we do is non religious. It empties your mind and allows it to stop thinking and, as this research shows, thinking can make you unhappy. Our meditation teaches you how to focus on what you are doing which brings you a positive feeling and after a Meditation session you are left with a positive, happy feeling. (As well as Meditation we also learn the psychology of Happiness and the physical behaviours that also lead to it.)
Here are more points that are mentioned in the article.

respondents reported that their minds were wandering 46.9 percent of time, and no less than 30 percent of the time during every activity except making love.

Me: Stop thinking negative thoughts, make love instead. LOL

Killingsworth and Gilbert, a professor of psychology at Harvard, found that people were happiest when making love, exercising, or engaging in conversation. They were least happy when resting, working, or using a home computer.

Me; So there you have it. The perfect life plan. Start NOW! Go to the gym. Make love. Chat to people.
Don’t lie in bed (thinking?), don’t work and don’t use home computers (?????YIKES!) LOL

whereas a person’s mind-wandering status accounted for about 10.8 percent of his or her happiness………….

“Many philosophical and religious traditions teach that happiness is to be found by living in the moment, and practitioners are trained to resist mind wandering and to ‘be here now,’” Killingsworth and Gilbert note in Science. “These traditions suggest that a wandering mind is an unhappy mind.”

Me: Please note that The Happy People are not a philosophical or religious group. The Meditation goes above that to a higher level.

Killingsworth and Gilbert’s 2,250 subjects in this study ranged in age from 18 to 88, representing a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and occupations. Seventy-four percent of study participants were American.

So why not join The Happy People, it is FREE and will lead to more Happiness in your life. As soon as you start you will see the improvements that you want in your life!
My next blog will also cover this area of how YOU stop Happiness happening in Your life and how to defeat this negative part of your behaviour.

To All Who Are Interested In Happiness And All The HAPPY PEOPLE
(Readers who live in Merseyside, UK, please note Post Script at end of post) I haven’t been posting many Happiness blogs lately. This is because I have been spending a lot of time learning about how to do the computer side of things.
One thing you will notice is that I now have Archives that are easy to browse. I had seen in the bog statistics that a lot of visitors to the site were interested in back posts.  Previously, if you wanted to look for blog posts that you are interested in the Archives all you would see was the name of a month, the year and how many posts like this “Jan, 2011, 3 posts”. A lot of people were reading the Archives and this was ridiculously hard for them and took a long time. So I had a go at making it easier.
1) Now you have a choice of sections to look in at the top right hand corner
2) There is a search box for categories lower down where you can click on ‘Categories’ and get a drop down menu to choose articles from.
3) A section of recent posts
4) A section of the top most popular posts.
5) Near the bottom of the main post there is a list of related posts.
It took a lot of time to sort these functions out but I’m sure that these additions will allow people to look for the type of article that they want to read with great ease.
Now I start doing more posts about Happiness, Meditation and Love for you  to read study and use.I hope that you enjoy these new functions and can enjoy browsing the blog site including the Archives.

Eight Happiness Lessons
Here is a list of eight Happiness lessons that you can use in your everyday life:-

1) The top level of Happiness is to Love and be Loved. You must love everybody. A lot of people think that they can’t do that. They are right. You can’t just do it right away. You must work to a plan. First concentrate on those who are near and dear to you already. Then enlarge your circle of Happiness to include other people. If somebody lets you down, cut them off your list. You can always come back to them when your power of Love is even stronger.
2) If you do cut somebody off, they must not be aware of it. Treat them with respect. Do not fall out with them. Then, if you do try them again, you will be in a good place to start and win them over.
3) Happiness starts in your home. If it doesn’t, get working on it now! When you have  got this sorted, every time your feet hit the street, you will be taking a pocketful of it out with you!
4) Never let a petty row hurt a happy relationship. Be the first to apologise. If you can’t admit that you were wrong, use NLP, change the subject. Don’t discus the actual problem. Keep repeating how wrong you were to get upset, to get angry, to say that. Keep repeating that.
5) Again! Be the first to apologise.
6) Spend some time alone every day. Meditate if you know how. ( Do a search in the categories box on the blog)
7) The past is the past. If you can’t rectify it, don’t think about it, don’t talk about it and don’t cast it up.
8) If you keep doing happy things and building Happiness into your life you will be Happy. If you don’t understand or don’t know how
JOIN THE HAPPY PEOPLE, NOW!
P.S  If you live in Merseyside, UK and are good on computers or blogging please let me know. Or if you live here and are interested in what I write about. I live in Liverpool, Merseyside, UK and am trying to get study groups with activities and events going. Again, please contact me.

Money CAN Buy Happiness!
It is often said that money can’t buy happiness. Lots of research has been  done that shows this to be true. And it is almost always true. But being poor won’t buy happiness either. The truth is that whatever amount of money you have, what you spend your money on will control to a large extent just how happy you are. I’m not talking about people who are suffering illnesses or disabilities or are bereaved. These ‘unhappinesses’ have very little to do with money.

Money spent wisely, can help you to be happier. Some people (I’m talking about the UK) have very little money left after buying the essentials of life. But most people have some money left over. Some people are very wasteful with money.
They spend it foolishly on gambling, alcohol and drug abuse. Things that they say they enjoy but really bring much stress, misery and problems into their lives. And lots of Bad Karma!
Many, many people that I know fall into this latter group. People on good incomes who have nothing in the bank and mountains of debt.
As the leader of The Happy People, I am determined to show everybody that they  can be happy.  This is an easy group to start with. They have the ability to act more wisely with the money that they do have. They only have to stop wasting it and start spending it on things that will bring more happiness into their lives and the lives of the people that they love.
I have just read an excellent article about this approach to happiness. The link to the full article is at the bottom of the post.
Here are some of the highlights and my comments which are written in italics. But do read the full article at the link.

Using Money To Buy Happiness

Recent research has begun to distinguish two aspects of subjective well-being. Emotional well-being refers to the emotional quality of an individual’s everyday experience — the frequency and intensity of experiences of joy, stress, sadness, anger, and affection that make one’s life pleasant or unpleasant. Life evaluation refers to the thoughts that people have about their life when they think about it. We raise the question of whether money buys happiness, separately for these two aspects of well-being. We report an analysis of more than 450,000 responses to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a daily survey of 1,000 US residents conducted by the Gallup Organization. […] When plotted against log income, life evaluation rises steadily.

The Gallup Organization is a very reliable one and this is a massive number of responses so we can trust the results.

But even if you’re fortunate enough to have a good income, how you spend your money has a strong influence on how h appy – or unhappy – it will make you. And, again, there’s science behind this. The relevant research is summarized in If money doesn’t make you happy, then you probably aren’t spending it right (pdf).

Most people don’t know the basic scientific facts about happiness — about what brings it and what sustains it — and so they don’t know how to use their money to acquire it.

I have written lots of posts here on the blog about this.

and it should not be surprising when wealthy people who know nothing about happiness end up with lives that aren’t that much happier than anyone else’s. Money is an opportunity for happiness, but it is an opportunity that people routinely squander because the things they think will make them happy oftendon’t

You must study the blog and learn every possible way to increase your knowledge of happiness, how to get it and how to use your money to get even more. Here are some of the article’s advised ways

.

What is, then, the science of happiness? I’ll summarize the basic eight points as best I can, but read the actual paper (pdf) to obtain the citations and details on the underlying studies underpinning each of these principles.

1. Buy experiences instead of things

Things get old. Things become ordinary. Things stay the same. Things wear out. Things are difficult to share. But experiences are totally unique; they shine like diamonds in your memory, often more brightly every year, and they can be shared forever. Whenever possible, spend money on experiences such as taking your family to Disney World, rather than things like a new television.

Again, more posts on my blog.

2. Help others instead of yourself

Human beings are intensely social animals. Anything we can do with money to create deeper connections with other human beings tends to tighten our social connections and reinforce positive feelings about ourselves and others. Imagine ways you can spend some part of your money to help others – even in a very small way – and integrate that into your regular spending habits.

Sharing also brings GOOD KARMA. See my blog.

3. Buy many small pleasures instead of few big ones

Because we adapt so readily to change, the most effective use of your money is to bring frequent change, not just “big bang” changes that you will quickly grow acclimated to. Break up large purchases, when possible, into smaller ones over time so that you can savor the entire experience. When it comes to happiness, frequency is more important than intensity. Embrace the idea that lots of small, pleasurable purchases are actually more effective than a single giant one.

Great advice.

4. Buy less insurance

Humans adapt readily to both positive and negative change. Extended warranties and insurance prey on your impulse for loss aversion, but because we are so adaptable, people experience far less regret than they anticipate when their purchases don’t work out. Furthermore, having the easy “out” of insurance or a generous return policy can paradoxically lead to even more angst and unhappiness because people deprived themselves of the emotional benefit of full commitment. Thus, avoid buying insurance, and don’t seek out generous return policies.

I think this is mainly an American thing. I don’t do this often,  I’ m from Merseyside, UK, so I’m not sure about it.

5. Pay now and consume later

Immediate gratification can lead you to make purchases you can’t afford, or may not even truly want. Impulse buying also deprives you of the distance necessary to make reasoned decisions. It eliminates any sense of anticipation, which is a strong source of happiness. For maximum happiness, savor (maybe even prolong!) the uncertainty of deciding whether to buy, what to buy, and the time waiting for the object of your desire to arrive.

When you are buying something, think about it overnight. Commonly known as ‘Sleep on it’. I think the article means significant items. If you did it before buying a daily paper, it could be a waste of of time LOL. Thinking about it, though I stopped buying newspapers a long time ago because the weekly cost mounts up high.

6. Think about what you’re not thinking about

We tend to gloss over details when considering future purchases, but research shows that our happiness (or unhappiness) largely lies in exactly those tiny details we aren’t thinking about. Before making a major purchase, consider the mechanics and logistics of owning this thing, and where your actual time will be spent once you own it. Try to imagine a typical day in your life, in some detail, hour by hour: how will it be affected by this purchase?

7. Beware of comparison shopping

Comparison shopping focuses us on attributes of products that arbitrarily distinguish one product from another, but have nothing to do with how much we’ll enjoy the purchase. They emphasize characteristics we care about while shopping, but not necessarily what we’ll care about when actually using or consuming what we just bought. In other words, getting a great deal on cheap chocolate for $2 may not matter if it’s not pleasurable to eat. Don’t get tricked into comparing for the sake of comparison; try to weight only those criteria that actually matter to your enjoyment or the experience.

This is a good one. Basically, before looking to see how good this item is compared with that one, you should ask yourself do you really need any of them. Or could you hold on to your money.

8. Follow the herd instead of your head

Don’t overestimate your ability to independently predict how much you’ll enjoy something. We are, scientifically speaking, very bad at this. But if something reliably makes others happy, it’s likely to make you happy, too. Weight other people’s opinions and user reviews heavily in your purchasing decisions. Happiness is a lot harder to come by than money. So when you do spend money, keep these eight lessons in mind to maximize whatever happiness it can buy for you.
