Happiness That Comes From Others!

Much new research is being done on exploring how Happiness is a combination of pleasure and purpose. Here are some of the results.

Some people will be more inclined towards finding happiness through pleasure seeking activities, other people towards purpose seeking or charitable work. A truly happy life has some balance of both pleasurable and purposeful activities. Volunteering, for example, is both pleasurable and purposeful, but particularly purposeful.  It’s a feeling of happiness caused by helping others.

The Scientists know that we exist to make ourselves happy – we can’t help it.

Everything that you do is motivated by the  good feelings that you hope will come from it, Those feelings can be made up of actions that directly bring YOU pleasure and those feelings can come from doing things that you feel will help OTHER PEOPLE! It would be foolish of you to seek out something that you knew for sure was going to make you miserable. The research being done shows that people, who spend time helping other people, feel a lot of pleasure from doing so.

Most of you know the meaning of the pleasure that comes from doing things for yourself but perhaps you should add in more of the meaningful pleasure that comes through helping others.

So how can you do this? What can you do to achieve happiness through meaningful action?

Perhaps the chief activities that bring you meaningful type of happiness are ones that draw you out of your bubble of self-interest and lead you to helping others in some way,  This can range from ordinary, day-to-day activities like helping to take care of friends, family, and community, to much larger pursuits like devoting years or decades of your life to find ways to reduce human suffering.

P.S      AND another way that doing this type of activity will bring more benefit to you is The Law Of Karma. Doing good work and helping others will bring rewards back to you. That includes Happiness. lol

British Families Want Happiness But Get Depression!

Depression, Pessimism And Suicidal Tendencies Are Increasing!

As I wrote recently, the number of people suffering from Depression has nearly doubled in the past seven years. The experts believe that the speed of growth of this problem is picking up and  the problem numbers will only only take about five years to double up again.
The future looks very grim indeed. Here is an excerpt from a Daily Telegraph article:

British families want out as more seek relaxed life abroad. A majority of middle-class families want to leave Britain because it no longer offers them an adequate quality of life, a new survey has concluded.The report suggested that “old-fashioned British values, thriving community spirit and a more relaxed way of life” were evident in Adelaide. 

Researchers found almost two in three families wanted to emigrate overseas because of the poor weather, rude locals and a celebrity-obsessed culture. Families say they also want to escape the economic downturn, expensive housing and the “loss of community spirit and neighbourliness” in British society.The survey, conducted by the University of Huddersfield, also found most wanted a new, more relaxed life in a community with a more optimistic “can do” attitude, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

And

The report says that all these people want to leave the country but most of them won’t. Instead they will be forced, for various reasons to carry on living in the hell that modern England is becoming. With the politicians, police, legal system, hospitals and schools that we have, is it any wonder that people are feeling so depressed and desperate?

So What Can YOU Do About It?

The most important thing you can do is to avoid the depression trap and start turning yourself on to the Happiness Lifestyle. I know that this sounds rather wishy-washy but it isn’t. In fact it is the simplest thing in the world, believe me. If doing something makes you feel bad, stop doing it! If doing something makes you feel good, keep on doing it until you fall down. And keep on doing it every chance that you get.
As I said this plan is the simplest plan in the world to understand and it is, isn’t it? Here it is again in bold:

But You Can’t Just Go From Depressed To Happy Like That, Can You?

Perhaps not, LOL. But you can start in some small area of your life, can’t you? You could make some small area of your life work for you instead of against you, can’t you? Try to be clever about it. The cleverer you are, the better you feel when you get a result. Trust me, you will get results You should end up amazing yourself.

What Is The Most Important First Thing For Me To Do?

The single most important thing is to just get started!
Think about the areas of your life in which you would like to do this. Pick an area which is not going to be too hard. One that is not too important. When you have had some good results, your confidence will be stronger and you can work on bigger areas and get good results.

Meditation! Good For Better HealthAND Depression!

Science is continually looking for ways to improve the quality of our live. What has become increasingly obvious to them is that an unbelievable number of people report suffering from depression. And what is more worrying, the number is increasing every year at an alarming rate. When they looked at this problem, they found that a lot of this depression was caused when people reported feeling loneliness. This was caused by many factors including bereavement, not having a partner or family, being housebound through physical disability or fear of  street crime, financial drawbacks etc. These problems are out of control amongst the elderly. The standards of mental and emotional health among the elderly are inhuman. This is made worse by the number of people living longer. I won’t say enjoying old age because so many of them are not.
So What’s The Good News? 
New research shows that meditation training lasting eight weeks reduced feelings of loneliness in people. They started off knowing that people who reported feeling lonely showed an increase in the number of  inflammation problems they were having. These inflammation problems were causing a variety of diseases. The researchers found that meditation greatly reduced these inflammation problems and helped to clear up the illnesses that they were causing. In the current online edition of the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, senior study author Steve Cole, a UCLA professor of medicine and psychiatry and a member of the Norman Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at UCLA, and colleagues report that the two-month program of  meditation greatly reduced the feelings of loneliness. This report also showed that the people involved showed a marked improvement in the amount of inflammation and the illnesses associated with it.
What Causes Inflammation?
Inflammation is a natural part of the immune system and is used to fight a wide variety of health problems, from infections like flu and gum disease to impact injuries like broken bones. It plays a very important part in the pathology of many diseases and psychological disorders. This research is the first evidence showing that meditation not only decreases loneliness also reduces inflammation and helps to clear up the problems causing the inflammation. If this is borne out by further research, meditation could become a powerful  way to improve the quality of life for many, many people with the long lasting health problems that involve inflammation.In the study, 40 adults were randomly placed in a meditation group or a control group that did not meditate. They were all the participants were rated at the beginning and the end of the study using an established loneliness scale. Blood samples were also collected at the beginning and end of the research. These meditators reported that they no longer felt so lonely and what was more amazing was that their blood tests showed a big reduction in signs of  inflammation.
Will You Find Meditation Hard?
No!
It is the easiest thing in the world once you get started.  This group went to 8 weekly two-hour meetings in which they learned how to meditate. They also practised meditation for 30 minutes each day at home and attended a single daylong retreat.How hard is that. You do do not need to any kind of retreat. This was only required for the sake of this research.
How Good Are These Results?
Excellent! This study is only only the tip of the iceberg. It is just one of a massive amount of research that is showing more and more positive benefits of meditation. Just last month, Dr. Helen Lavretsky, a UCLA professor of psychiatry and a Cousins Center member, published a study showing that a form of  meditation reduced inflammatory problems, as well as stress levels, among individuals who care patients with Alzheimer’s disease.( Please note this was about the carers not the Alzheimer’s disease patients. There is a growing awareness of the long term psychological problems of long term carers. And a lot of work is being done in this area.) How Will Meditation Bring You What You Want?
The power of meditation is based in all the things that your mind will bring when you have trained it through meditation. Your mind, or perhaps I should say, the way that you use  your mind, can be the most powerful tool that you ever use in your life.
It can and has changed peoples’ lives around completely. The Net is full of news about research that has been done and how it brings positive mental and physical changes to the people who practise it.
Bigger, Better Brain Users
Let’s look at high achievers like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Richard Branson. These three men have have all been winners in the game of life. Their minds allowed them to dream up big plans. They thought of ways to make those plans come true. They kept on thinking of new ways to keep their plans growing. In the end they conquered their world and kept on growing bigger and better. Their minds just kept getting stronger and stronger.A very important factor in their lives was that they kept a balance in life between the outer world and the inner world. Bill Gates retired early and spends his time on charitable works, Richard Branson spends long periods on his own tropical island  doing things he enjoys and that make him feel good and the late Steve Jobs used to regularly spend long periods of time meditating. These three built up powerful minds and used them in the correct manner. They brought pleasure and  happiness to millions of people, built themselves fantastic lifestyles and always kept that balance between outer success and inner peace. They lived lives of good Karma and enjoyed the paying back of good Karma that such actions bring. I’m sure that when Steve Jobs is reborn he will be operating at an even higher level than he was at in this world. All the good Karma he has earned will return to him many times over. That is the way that Karma works. It follows you from life to life. So not only do you enjoy the rewards of using your brain properly in this life but they will follow you into your next re-incarnation.
Let’s A Look At Some Of  The Losers In The Happiness Game
At the other extreme, we find some of life’s losers like drug abusers, alcoholics and suicidal depressives. All the different levels of lifestyle lie somewhere in between those two groups. And those different levels are all fixed by set patterns of thinking. You are what you think and you are how you think. The quality of your lifestyle is totally based on how you think about life, the people in your life and yourself. You, yourself, are the most important of these three things. Who you think you are, what you think you should have and what you think you are capable of getting will completely control what you are going to get in your life, they have always controlled your life and they will continue to control your life until you can change them.
When, say ‘them’, I am talking about YOU! Who you think you are, what you think you should have and what you think you are capable of getting. These things are your beliefs. The things that you believe about yourself. You must change those beliefs. They are things that hold you back from achieving what you really want in life.
How can you have a love that is deeply fulfilling if you think nobody likes you?
How can you be successful if you believe that you couldn’t succeed  at anything?
How can you be happy if you believe that the world is an unhappy place? All you are doing is building walls to keep you away from what you want.
Lots of people have these type of beliefs and even more strange ones. Where do they come from? The answer is, from lots of places. Parents, teachers and peer groups. Lots of research has been done on the last one. Overwhelming evidence shows that you are very strongly influenced by the people you mix with. The amount of money you earn, the amount of body fat that you carry and the success of your relationships are directly related to the groups of people that you mix, work or live with. (All the more reason for you to join The Happy People. Plus the fact that it is FREE! LOL)
Now I’m not saying that the three top achievers that I mentioned above had negative beliefs like that. They may have done, they may not have done. What they did have was a mental plan that kept them moving forward, allowed them to dream about a positive future and the focus to make those dreams come true. They didn’t necessarily have a better brain than other people. They just played better PROGRAMMES on it.
You! Yes You! How About You?
Well, let me say that if you are not getting the results in your life that you want, it is because you are running the  wrong programmes through your mind. If you want some music you do not tune in to a sports channel, do you? If you want happiness, success and lots of top drawer relationships, then thoughts, beliefs and plans to make them happen must be playing in your mind.
The Happy News
But first the unhappy news. It is practically impossible to get rid of those negative programmes that are controlling your life right now.
So what’s the happy news? The happy news is that when you start running positive programmes, it’s practically impossible to get rid of them! Once you get that winning attitude in your life, everything starts to turn to good and stays good.
So How Do You Get Started?
What you have to do, is replace all those negative messages that you keep sending yourself with positive ones. You have to first get rid of the negative ones. The way to do this is to start MEDITATING! You are dragging a wagon load of negative, unhelpful beliefs and behaviours behind you. Meditation will allow you to leave them behind and get busy with your new ones. When you have emptied your mind of all it’s old, useless baggage, you can fill it up with the good stuff! And then your fun will start. And believe me, you will have some fun.
Just imagine how good you will feel when some of your plans start to work out for you. Don’t get me wrong, Meditation is not Magic. You must learn how to do it properly, you must plan for what you want and you must focus. But meditation will help you to do these things better and easier. It must be the right type of meditation. There are many, many, many types of meditation. All of them are helpful for you BUT if you want the deep, life changes that we are talking about here then you must learn Empty Mind/Zen/Chan meditation. It is the only one that I know that is really suitable.

Here is a truly great article about how you can be happy by choosing to be happy.
Many bad things can stop the happiness in your life. Depression, lack of money, bereavement, changes of circumstance can all destroy your full enjoyment of life.
The tragedy of these setbacks is that you lose sight of the fact that you were born to be happy. If you are not happy your physical and mental health will worsen. You know things should be different but you don’t know how to change them. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that happiness is an easy thing to get. For some people it can be next to impossible. BUT you will get there.  So the sooner you start, the sooner you will get there. The sooner you stop all those unhappiness hormones pumping through your body and get those happiness hormones pumping into your bloodstream, the healthier and  happier you will feel.
How To Be Happy
First you must make the choice to be happy. You must adopt the mind set that you are going to be happy.
Thenyou must have a strong plan:
1) Separate your problem areas out.
2) Start working on them.
3) If you can’t change some of them, accept the fact. Compartmentalise these  areas.
4) Start working on the happiness areas that you can change.
5) Start working on building new areas for happiness into your life.

You Can Choose Happiness

Yet, despite how difficult things are for so many, as I had to learn myself, it’s important to realize that we can still be perfectly happy… providing that we understand the one, true source of genuine, lasting happiness.

There’s a well-known scientific study that provides some necessary insight:

Researchers looked at three groups of people: lottery winners, accident victims who tragically became paraplegic, and a control group who neither won the lottery nor suffered severe trauma. Predictably enough, the study found that in the first few months after winning, lottery recipients experienced a large upward spike in their level of happiness, while the happiness level for the recently paralyzed subjects fell dramatically.

That’s not surprising, as anyone who has ever received shockingly good or bad news can attest. What’s startling is what researchers discovered beginning at sixth months and becomes unmistakable at the 12-month mark: Within a year, the happiness level of those that had won the lottery had fallen all the way back to, and in some cases well-below where it had been prior to their windfall. Conversely, after about a year, the paraplegic subjects had adjusted to their new life circumstances, and their happiness levels had recovered entirely. In fact, they were generally much happier than the lottery winners!

If  You REALLY want to be happy, get GOOD friends
But they have to be  GOOD friends. They must be sensible, upbeat and most of all, have good intentions towards you. This last one is very important. Because if they hurt your feelings, or if they reject you, it will hurt you just as much as if  they had hit you with a punch. Emotional hurt is the same as physical hurt. They both effect the same areas of the brain. The cortex and the dorsal posterior insula, are two very powerful areas of your brain, They are both kicked into action by injury to your body or  injury to your emotions. And one is as bad as the other. You wouldn’t let a friend punch you in your  face and you mustn’t let them punch you in your feelings.
What should you do?
Friends are very important to your mental and emotional health. You should have as many of them as you can get. But they must be the right type! Loads of research has been done that show that the wrong type of friends can cause you a lot of mental harm. If you find that you are made to feel angry, depressed or upset by your friends, then get rid of them. Get different ones. That is the simple simple solution. It is very easy to say, understand and believe BUT not so easy to do in real life. You must have lots and lots of good friends. Ones that support you, ones that make you feel good and ones that you enjoy being in the company of. You must build up the number of them in your life.
And you must start cutting down on the other type. The ones that are always moaning, make you feel depressed or put you down. Start off with the worse one first. Start spending less time with them. And, if possible avoiding them altogether. This can be very difficult to do. Particularly if they live next door, are members of your family or you are married to them! LOL!
Some people you can’t avoid. You have to teach them how to become better friends. But that will be another another lesson, in an other article and on another day! LOL!
Following  the above plan will not only give you better relationships, it will also give you a strong feeling of having more control over your own life and you will develop more self-confidence. You will be happier in yourself  and with yourself.
Why will this plan work for me?
Many, many neuroscientist who have examined a large body of work called the Framingham data have found some amazing facts. They found that good behaviours — like quitting smoking or staying slender or being happy —is passed from friend to friend almost in the same way that the ‘flu does. Your health, happiness and even your lifestyle are all linked to your friends and people whom you mix with. If the people you associate  have positive attitudes, have healthy lifestyles and are happy, this will tend to rub off on you. You, too, will have positive attitudes, a healthy lifestyles and be happy. Which means that you could (drum roll) become more successful and healthier as well as happier.
The Bad News
The bad news from the Framingham Report is that it works in both directions.And the same was true of all behaviours. You will pick up all sorts of behaviours that are unhelpful, unwanted and even harmful. The Report shows that over and over again. That groups of friends  can “infect” each other with being overweight, unhappiness and smoking.

Just so you fully understand this POWERFUL, POWERFUL lesson: 

You Want To Be Healthy, Happy And Positive?
Then you must absorb the lessons above. This research is proving that what you achieve in your life, how healthy you are and how happy you feel is strongly linked to the type of people that you mix with. I believe in keeping things very, very simple. Then any message that I give is easy to understand. So here is a simple way to lift your life up to a higher level. Here, again, is how to use these findings.
The Simple Way
Think about all the friends and associates that you mix with.  Think about the affects that each of them has on you. Start to spend more time with the ones that have a positive influence on you.  Start to spend less time with the  people who have a negative influence on you. Keep making steady progress in both areas.
As I said above this is a very simple plan. BUT it can be very hard to follow.
So What Is The Secret Of Success?
Do a little but do it all the time, as and when you can. A very important presupposition of The Happy People is that a SMALL change can make a BIG difference. DO  NOT try to make big changes in your life overnight. Make small but steady changes and be determined. Make GENTLE progress. You want to EASE negative people out of your life. Not turn them into eneemies.

Meditation will make you better at multitasking.
When you multitask, you’re often running in so many different directions, it’s hard to do one thing well. Here’s how to multitask with a clear mind.If you need to do some serious multitasking, some training in meditation beforehand could make the work smoother and less stressful, new research from the University of Washington shows. And who wouldn’t want that?

Research suggests that meditation training can help people working with information stay on tasks longer with fewer distractions and also improves memory and reduces stress. Here’s how to quickly focus your mind on the one thing you really need or want to do:

  1. Stop. As soon as you realize you are multitasking, stop. In other words, learn to interrupt the interruptions.
  2. Clear. Now take a moment to untask. To untask, try something silly, you can do a little dance, jump up and down, sing a song, or even scream. The important thing is to get in the habit (as soon as you catch yourself multitasking) of giving yourself a complete mental pause. Think of this as pressing the reset button on your brain.
  3. Choose. Now that you have untasked, ask yourself, “What do I really want to do (or have to do) right now?” You might need to wait a few seconds before getting an answer. Or you might find that the answer pops into your mind immediately. Now that you have cleared your mind of other…………….

How To Be Happy Helping Others!

Another Lesson In How To Be Happy
Most of you have felt happiness at times in your life. The Art of being one of The Happy People is to be happy more massively. You have to learn how to be happy on a massive scale. To really enjoy those great feelings more often, for longer periods of time and more powerfully than you have known before.
You are entitled to be happy. God, or nature if you prefer, made you that way. Your whole life should be devoted to feeling happiness as often and for as long as you can.
Are You Serious?
It wouldn’t be realistic to think that you could be totally happy for every moment of your life. That is not what I am saying.
Into everybody’s life a little rain must fall.
The rain will fall into my life, your life, everybody’s life. Believe me! I know! LOL
But what I am saying is that you must have the skill in you to enjoy every possible piece of happiness that you can, wherever you can and whenever you can.
I know that most of the people reading this have started following The Happy People advice here on this blog. If you aren’t, you should. It’s all free.
The Next Step
Anyhow, once you have started.Here is the next step. It is very important,  very effective and very  powerful. Start on this second step as soon as possible.
Happiness Is Sharing, Share your Happiness
You could say that happiness is like a candle. Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. And the flame will stay as bright. You must use your happiness candle to  light other people’s candles. Other people all have a candle. They just haven’t lit it yet.
Your candle of happiness must be shared. You must use it to light their candles and show them how to be happy. You must use it to help other depressed, dysfunctional or stressed out people. This has several great side  effects. It makes the people you’re sharing with happy, it makes you even happier and it produces good Karma. It produces good Karma in two ways. You are being happy and that is what Nature designed you for. Above everything else your purpose in life is to be happy. When you are, Good Karma is flowing for you. You are sharing your gift with somebody who is probably a friend, spouse or relative close to your heart.
Just think about it for moment. When you share your joy in living with another person, you are doing  something truly beautiful. You/we are making ripples in the pond of  Life.

Let’s start with the most important thing that I can tell you.  You should have a life that is full of love, wealth and happiness.Your body thrives when you do. It’s your basic reason for living. But it isn’t happening for you, is it? But that is going to change, believe me! Let’s look at why. it’s not happening. Here are the main reasons:

The First Reason That You Are Unhappy
1) You do not believe that you should be happy.You have been brainwashed as a child. The people, who surrounded you from early childhood, didn’t tell you that you should be happy. They were too busy telling you that you couldn’t have everything a young child wants. Quite rightly so. As a child you shouldn’t be given so many sweets that you are ill. LOL.And you must behave yourself and not do everything you want to.
They didn’t teach you that your body is designed to be happy. When you are, your body starts to release all sorts of chemicals into your bloodstream. These chemicals make you feel good, you will have a big improvements in your mental and physical health and, if you do get ill, anxious or stressed out, you will recover more quickly.
Be Good To Yourself, Get Happy
The most important lesson you should have learned from those people is that, as you grow up, your main duty in life is to be happy as much and as often as you can! You forget about the sweets and toys and start concentrating on Love, Wealth and Happiness.
Now I know what you are thinking. This is nonsense. Nobody could have that type of life. And you are right. Bad things happen to everybody: Rejection, failure, stress, bereavements and illness. A lot of bad things can be summed up as a lot of other bad people LOL.
These bad things can put you on a downer and if a few happen together you can hit a patch of depression. This is normal. The problem is that you have been brought up to think that those sort of things can’t be changed. That you must just suffer them.
And that is wrong! They ARE a normal part of life. But you do NOT have to just suffer them. That is the old lifestyle and you are going to change all of that. You are going to learn how to have a perfect lifestyle.
When you hit a bad down turn, you must know that it is not where you should be. And you must get back to a perfect lifestyle as quickly as possible.
That is what those people have been telling you.
The Second Reason That You Are Unhappy
In short, it is because you don’t know HOW to make the changes . The changes that will make a difference in your life. Those differences that you need and want and should have. A Depressing Story (But A Happy Ending)
I was running a group and was trying to establish a baseline for happiness. I asked the group to remember the last time that they were happy.One lady (aged 43) started crying. She told the group that the last time had been when she was 8 years old and she had won a prize in school. She later told us about when her and her sister would be in bed and making too much noise laughing and playing. Her mother would come upstairs and warn them that:
Laughter at night would mean tears in the morning.’The next day everything that went wrong was blamed on the two children laughing the night before.
What a lesson to give kids!
Anyhow, she came to my groups for a long time and she completely changed her life around. She set out her dream, she worked on it and she lives it.
And you will change your life around. You will learn how to move your life up to a higher level. It’s your right as a human being. You’re entitled to it. And I am going to make sure that you get it. Start looking forward to lots of fulfilment, friends and fun. They should be yours, they could be yours and they will be yours.
