More Meditation will give you the power move mountains mentally. Do you want a super charged brain? A more powerful brain? A brain operating at higher levels?  Meditation will do that for you. Trust me. The scientist have found evidence to show this..  It will give you into a more positive, happier, enjoyable life.
How  will it do that?  Well, when you start meditating, the actual grey matter in a part of you brain called the hippocampus will grow thicker and bigger. As a result of this:
1) Your can deal with stress and its dreadful effects with greater ease.
2) Your ability to do creative thinking will grow.
3) You will learn new stuff more easily
4) Your memory will be stronger.

Experts on brain scanning at Massachusetts, U.S.A General Hospital say:

“You can actually change the brain and this will add increased power to your thinking, your well being and your quality of life.”
How can YOU get these gifts?
From meditating every day!
I have always known this. But it’s good to see the scientists PROVING that what I’ve  taught to people for 35 years (i.e meditating is the most beneficial, powerful and life changing thing you can possibly do.
Why not try it? You may end up running the country.
And probablydo a better job than the mugs doing it now. LOL

Depression, Pessimism And Suicidal Tendencies Are Increasing!

As I wrote recently, the number of people suffering from Depression has nearly doubled in the past seven years. The experts believe that the speed of growth of this problem is picking up and  the problem numbers will only only take about five years to double up again.
The future looks very grim indeed. Here is an excerpt from a Daily Telegraph article:

Daily Telegraph

British families want out as more seek relaxed life abroad. A majority of middle-class families want to leave Britain because it no longer offers them an adequate quality of life, a new survey has concluded. The report suggested that “old-fashioned British values, thriving community spirit and a more relaxed way of life” were evident in Adelaide.

Researchers found almost two in three families wanted to emigrate overseas because of the poor weather, rude locals and a celebrity-obsessed culture. Families say they also want to escape the economic downturn, expensive housing and the “loss of community spirit and neighbourliness” in British society. The survey, conducted by the University of Huddersfield, also found most wanted a new, more relaxed life in a community with a more optimistic “can do” attitude, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

And

The report says that all these people want to leave the country but most of them won’t. Instead they will be forced, for various reasons to carry on living in the hell that modern England is becoming. With the politicians, police, legal system, hospitals and schools that we have, is it any wonder that people are feeling so depressed and desperate?

So What Can YOU Do About It?

The most important thing you can do is to avoid the depression trap and start turning yourself on to the Happiness Lifestyle. I know that this sounds rather wishy-washy but it isn’t. In fact it is the simplest thing in the world, believe me. If doing something makes you feel bad, stop doing it! If doing something makes you feel good, keep on doing it until you fall down. And keep on doing it every chance that you get.
As I said this plan is the simplest plan in the world to understand and it is, isn’t it? Here it is again in bold:
If doing something makes you feel bad, stop doing it! If doing something makes you feel good, keep on doing it until you fall down. And keep on doing it every chance that you get.
If you still don’t understand it, get a clever friend to explain it to you! LOL!
There are 300 articles here on this blog. They will teach you how to get started, how to make the changes and how to keep making improvements. Start reading them, NOW!

Depression (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

But You Can’t Just Go From Depressed To Happy Like That, Can You?

Perhaps not, LOL. But you can start in some small area of your life, can’t you? You could make some small area of your life work for you instead of against you, can’t you? Try to be clever about it. The cleverer you are, the better you feel when you get a result. Trust me, you will get results You should end up amazing yourself.

What Is The Most Important First Thing For Me To Do?

The single most important thing is to just get started!
Think about the areas of your life in which you would like to do this. Pick an area which is not going to be too hard. One that is not too important. When you have had some good results, your confidence will be stronger and you can work on bigger areas and get good results.

Love, Peace and Happiness,

Happiness And Money
If you want to be Happy, having money isn’t the most important thing. Depression is the main cause of  unhappiness and not a lack of money.

How much money you get only has a small direct affect on on how happy you feel. According to Lord Richard Layard, of the London School of Economics, in an article in the Metro. Some quotes from the story are given below in italics:

Metro: Size of salary has only a small effect on our overall wellbeing, according to a report which claims to offer the first complete snapshot of the nation’s happiness. Income matters but it’s not the only thing that matters,’Poor mental health can reduce life expectancy at the same rate as smoking – is highlighted as one of the biggest issues affecting the nation’s happiness.

As I have said, in many, many articles, Depression, not poverty, is the enemy of true Happiness. Some people are rich and unhappy, others are poor but happy. To put it another way, some people are rich AND depressed. Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m NOT saying that you should be poor if you want to be happy. The aim of The Happy People is to never be depressed AND have money. And these are two different aims. At present, we are working on getting rid of depression and building up Happiness.
There is been lots of studies of poor countries where the people are very happy. More so than in the rich countries. These studies show different areas of life, rather than wealth, which can produce much happiness. These people do not get depressed about their poverty. You can use these areas to make improvements in your mental health BUT money, used the right way, can also bring lots of Happiness.
You must always be working on ways of building up the amount of Happiness in your life AND the amount of money in your bank account.

Children And Happiness

Metro: And ‘emotional health’ in childhood is singled out as the most important factor in adult wellbeing.‘It has a major influence on children’s subsequent success – their relationships, physical health

I take it that by this they are talking about children having  ’a happy childhood’. If you consider yourself one of The Happy People, and I cannot emphasise this enough, you have the sacred duty to make sure that EVERY child that you are hear of, know or are responsible for is protected from abuse, nurtured to full healthy development and is Happy. There must be no weakening on this. It is your full duty and fully affects your KARMIC balance more than anything I know of. A depressed child is a sin against nature. KARMA knows what you should do and what you fail to do. if you truly want to be one of The Happy People, don’t fail this duty.

Metro:  and whether they can get a good job,’ said Lord Layard. The Measuring National Wellbeing report was ordered by the government. New data will be collected each year and taken into account alongside traditional economic measures of prosperity.

They said this last year but I’ve seen no evidence, have you?

Metro: Lord Gus O’Donnell, of the Cabinet Office, said the new approach could ‘revolutionise’ policy-making – but work was needed to turn the report’s findings into practical ideas.

This blog has 300 articles. All full of good, practical ways to be Happier. Don’t wait for the government. Start to study the articles NOW!  LOL!

Back soon, Love,Peace and Happiness,
Tommy

Depression! The Alarming Truth! The number of people who are looking help because they are depressed is 7 times more than what what it was 40 years ago! Let me repeat that. For every victim of depression 40 years ago there are now 7. It is truly alarming!
What Is Depression?
It can effect people at different levels of intensity. It can be weak and short lasting or it can grind you down to feeling suicidal and last for years.
Think about this. A person can be told that they have terminal cancer. They often battle on right up to the end in spite of dreadful pain and suffering. Another can have an attack of depression and after a short time, commit suicide. This, to me, indicates that depression can be more serious in some cases than cancer. Lots of cases of cancer can be cured, suicide can not.
What Can You Do About It?
For our purpose and to keep it simple I am going to suggest describing depression as a lack of  Happiness. This gives you a way to approach it. When you depressed you are having bad feelings that have different levels of intensity and lasting. If you can start having happy feelings, those depressing feelings will be weakened. And if your happy feelings continue and get stronger, your depression will fade away. You may think that this is a bit too simple to deal with something that can be as serious as depression, and I wouldn’t blame you. It is only for the lower levels of depresion. And that means a lot of the people who suffer mild depression can benefit from this. If your depression is occasional and not too bad you are one of the peopel that can change your life around.  So what you must do is become a happy person.
What Is Happiness?
1) The amount of Happiness in your life can be divided into two areas.
A)Your present and your future. Nearly half of your Happiness in life comes from your attitudes and what you do in your daily life. This is mainly the people you mix with i.e spouses, the opposite sex, families and your community.
B) Your genetics and your past life. The rest it is down to your genetics and how you were brought up. And, of course, the unhappiness and depression in your life caused by these factors A) and B).  We, The Happy People, are always looking for ways to build up these areas of your life.
Here is the basic plan for beating depression. For area A), your present and future life, you must learn how to change your attitudes, how you mix with people and what you do so that your life becomes full of Happiness. And how to avoid the ways that people fall into unhappiness.  If B), your past life is a problem area, if you have had a particularly unhappy upbringing and life up until now, you must free yourself from any baggage that has built up. What you learned from parents and teachers may have puts lots of  unhelpful beliefs in your head or caused you unhappiness and to have bad memories. These have to be got rid of. Otherwise they can stop you from moving forward into a really happy lifestyle.
Two of the best ways  your pastto get rid of baggage from are:-
a) Meditation. This is very successful, but it must be the right kind of  meditation. Unfortunately, most of the popular types being taught are not suitable. All meditation is good, but this is a specialized area and needs a special approach.
b) Again a specialized, advanced NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) technique called Clearing Up Personal History.

Who Wants To Be Happier, Smarter And Fitter!
The Happy People already know about this stuff but it is nice to know that the experts are proving it to be true. Here is a great article about it. There is a link to it at the bottom of this post. Make sure that you read it. If you are not already one of the Happy People, it could get you started on a new life. It could make you HAPPIER, SMARTER and FITTER. And you’d like that, wouldn’t you? Of course you would! That’s the great thing about doing this stuff. It’s so much fun once you get started.
I don’t think anybody really needs any help about how to get started doing light exercise. (If you are not already exercising, you should start off on a light routine) But perhaps you may like to know how to become one of The Happy People?
Would You Like To Be One?
Here are three great arguments for being one.
1) It’s EASY
2) It’s FREE and
3) You will become HAPPIER person!
Three great reasons, aren’t they? I can’t think of better ones, can you? LOL!
Here’s How To Be One
Just decide to be one! LOL! That’s how easy it is. You are now one of us but now you must behave in certain ways. You must start thinking, talking and doing things in a new ways. Happiness is often a choice and you must learn how make that choice. You will learn how by studying this blog and  by exploring the material that is published there or recommended (such as this article)
Here are sections from the article plus my comments in italics:

 Happier, Smarter And Fitter

You already know that exercise will help improve your fitness level, can reduce your risk for chronic disease, and can help slim your waistline. But did you also know that getting the recommended amount of daily physical activity may also make you smarter and happier?

ME:  The Happy People know that.

Three studies add to the multitude of research that proves you really should make time in your busy schedule for at least 30 minutes each and every day.

ME:  30 minutes is a longish stretch. Make sure you keep it light, as I said above. Three 10 minutes sessions a day is a good way to start. I won’t go on about it because there are beginners’ exercise programmes everywhere. I only mention it because so many beginners overdo it.START OFF LIGHT!

William Killgore PhD and Zachary Schwab BS, of the McLean Hospital at Harvard University, asked 25 healthy adult men and 28 women from the Boston area to report on their weekly exercise habits and then take a test known as the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence. At least for the women surveyed, those who exercised more frequently each week had higher intelligence scores.
“Overall, these findings suggest that physical exercise is significantly related to relatively stable intellectual capacities among healthy adults,” the authors wrote in the journal Perceptual and Motor Skills.

While in this small study, the relationship between physical exercise and measured intelligence was most evident for women, there is no reason to believe that men would achieve similar mental benefits from putting in a workout each day.

ME:  Other  bigger reports show that men do achieve similar mental benefits from a workout each day.

Another recently released study found that people who exercise may be better protected from age-related changes in the brain, particularly for elderly adults. Participants in a study published by the University of Edinburgh found that people over 70 who exercised regularly showed less brain shrinkage over a three-year period than those who did little exercise. Brain shrinkage is linked to problems with memory and thinking. The researchers found that in the brain’s white matter – the wiring that transmits messages through the brain – was less damaged in those who exercise. Additionally, grey matter, the part of the brain with nerve cell bodies, was also greater in volume.

ME: More good news. There are lots of my blog posts covering this.

Dr Alan Gow of the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology who led the research, said, “Our results suggest that to maintain brain health, physical activity may be more beneficial than choosing more sedentary activities. Increasing physical activity – even a short walk each day – can only be encouraged.”
Professor James Goodwin, Head of Research at Age UK added, “This research re-emphasizes that it really is never too late to benefit from exercise, so whether it’s a brisk walk to the shops, gardning or competing in a fun run it is crucial that, those of us who can, get active as we grow older.”

ME:  Again, I repeat, it is very important for beginners to start off light!

Not only will that boost in activity help your brain stay young and active, it can also lift your mood after a hard day. Researchers with Penn State found that exercise really does make people happier.

Jaclyn Maher, a graduate student in kinesiology, studied men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 – a period in life when people appear to be most dissatisfied. “”Emerging adults are going through a lot of changes; they are leaving home for the first time and attending college or starting jobs. As a result, their satisfaction with life can plummet,” explains Maher.

The participants were divided into two groups who made diary entries either every eight days or every 14 days. The volunteers were assessed for their personality and took questionnaires asking about happiness levels and life satisfaction. They also reported on physical activity levels during the study period.

“We found that people’s satisfaction with life was directly impacted by their daily physical activity,” said Maher. “The findings reinforce the idea that physical activity is a health behavior with important consequences for daily well-being and should be considered when developing national policies to enhance satisfaction with life.”

ME:  So the people who were tested were in a highly stressed out stage of their life and it worked for them. People who are not under so much stress as these students would be  would get even better results. Please note that by ‘enhance satisfaction with life’ they mean felt happier! LOL1

“Based on these findings, we recommend that people exercise a little longer or a little harder than usual as a way to boost satisfaction with life,” said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology.

The CDC recommends 150 minutes each week, which sounds like a lot of time, but it doesn’t have to be accomplished all at once. Try doing a moderate intensity or vigorous workout for just 10 minutes at a time a couple of times a day. The benefits will add up, both physically and mentally

ME:  And, of course, join The Happy People. A great way of getting Happiness is to share it with other people. Get this bonus right now! Share this post with all your friends. Make them into Happy People.LOL!

Happiness, You And Winter!
You should be Happy all year round, but nature and your body tend to work against that. The shorter days and lack of sunshine make lots of changes in your body. It slows down your production of certain hormones. This can make you feel tired, sluggish and even depressed. It is called SAD (seasonal affective disorder) Now The Happy People never want to feel like that!. So, if you want to be one of The Happy People, what can you do about that?
Well, here are some of the problems and 5 ways to help you beat them and

smiley happy people

smiley happy people (Photo credit: madhavaji)

stay Happy
1) Happiness And The Winter Blues!
In Winter, the days are shorter. Missing out on sunlight, can cause SAD and this can cause mental dullness, depression and feelings of tiredness. Some people are strongly affected by SAD and others are hardly aware of it. If you are affected by it you should get out into the daylight for at least half an hour a day. This should be when the light is at it’s strongest Usually this is between 6am and  1opm. I’ll just repeat that:- outdoors, for at least half an hour, between 6am and 10pm.
This will help you beat SAD by resetting your bodyclock . If you can do some fitness training in the morning as well, that is great. Even if you have to get up half an hour earlier. This will lift your energy levels for the rest of the day and get your endorphin(Happiness) hormone pumping around your body up to seven hours afterwards.
2) Winter Happiness Diet!
In the winter, the body produces less of the Happiness hormone, Serotonin. The Happy People (You and Me. LOL) are always looking for ways to increase Serotonin, not to cut back on it! This is because it makes us feel so good! Because of this need we tend to eat more carbs. Cut down on the naughty white carbs like pasta, bread, rice and potatoes. These will put pounds on you and are the reason why so many people put weight on in the winter months. Instead eat low calorie carbs such as Swedes, carrots, sweet potatoes etc.
The body makes serotonin from a chemical called tryptophan, which is in foods such as dairy products, fish, bananas, dried dates, soya, almonds and peanuts. Combining tryptophan-rich foods with wholegrain carbs – such as brown rice, wholemeal bread or oats – helps the body release insulin, which boosts the amount of tryptophan available for your body to use.The bonus is that you will not put on that winter bloat and have to try to lose it next summer. And that will be a BIG happiness bonus LOL
P.S Don’t forget your iron intake. Eat red meat, fish, eggs, bread, fortified breakfast cereals, pulses, green leafy vegetables and dried fruit.
3) Get A Life!
Don’t stay in. Get out and meet or visit friends a few nights a week. Join a gym or club of some sort.  Don’t let the dark nights keep you indoors.
4) Set Yourself A Target!
Plan some area of your life. Learn a new language, perhaps for your next holiday. lose weight, get fitter, stop  smoking, start dance classes. Dancing is a great activity, if you really want to become one of The Happy People. It exercises your whole body, brings a tremendous flow of all the Happiness Hormones and gets you in touch with the opposite sex. It cannot be beaten for Happiness training, pure exercise and social grouping. I dance as much as I can. You can get as high as a kite without abusing alcohol.
5) Keep Your Sex Life Buzzing!
In the Summer you have high levels of the Happiness Hormones  serotonin and dopamine, and of the sex hormone testosterone, putting you in the mood for love. Everybody feels sexier in the Summer because of this. This is why all those sunshine holidaymakers act the way they do. And why not? If you  are not in a relationship, get one now. You’ll feel happier, I guarantee it! LOL It’ll give you something to do on those dark nights.
6) Walking With Nature!
Recent research shows that walking in a city increases depression but walking in the open outdoors will boost your mood, give you Happy feeling and increase you feelings of well being. So get out in the open as much as possible. you’ll feel better for it. I prefer  to walk at the sea side or by a river because the ozone level is higher and this makes me feel great.
Staying Happy!
So there you have 6 ways to beat the Winter blues.
Here in the U.K we have had a really horrible, dreadful, depressing summer .Many, many people tell me how down they are. And I can also see and hear even more people just by observation. Do not waste any time! Start the programme as soon as possible. This is Happiness you are losing out on.
The one thing that you must never ever waste. You have probably missed out on lots of Happiness in your life. This is the time for you to change all that. You are going to reach your two hands into the Happiness bucket and take out as much as you can. And keep on reaching in and taking out.LOL
Don’t worry, you’ll never miss out on any more. I’ll teach you how to do it.
The day you start the above programme could be the most important day in the rest of your life
BECAUSE
the plan is EVERGREEN. The plan itself is not seasonal. It will work in the Summer as well as in the Winter. If you start on it now, you will be in full flow when Winter comes. You will be bubbling with a high level of Happiness. AND when you see the Summer sunshine you will continue with the plan and hit an even higher level of Happiness.
This is not all talk or wishful thinking. It is all stuff that the scientists are proving by pooling research done in Universities, laboratories and out in the streets   in many, many tests all over the world. The amazing results come from being able to pool all the  results using computes. Here are some others things that you can do.

The Way T0 Happiness!
You are reading this because you want to know how to get Happiness in your life. This blog will show you how to do it in ways that are easy to understand, easy to use and easy to stick with. I guarantee that if you follow the simple ideas and lessons on this blog site you will lift your lifestyle to levels of positivity that you presently think are impossible.
I like to think that a simple way to do it is to plan lots of big enjoyable events into your life and, at the same time to plan an everyday steady flow of  medium and small pleasures to indulge yourself with.
This can be a problem. Lots of people, so they tell me, that you can get bogged down with unimportant but downbeat things that just seem to catch you up, and wear you down.
A simple way to increase the Happiness in your life is to cut down on these small irritating things. A lot of the things that make you feel good in everyday life are very ordinary. A sunny day, meeting a friend who is upbeat, finding money in the pocket of something you haven’t worn for a while, a quiet cup of coffee, a good book are small, small things that make you feel good. You can start putting more of these into your life easily, but what do you do about the things that stop your flow? How do you put an end to all those small, stressful, everyday depressing problems? Here is a sound way to do it!
5 Easy Steps To Happiness!
1) Chunk Your Happiness Target Down!
First let me ask you:-
How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time!
When you have a big job to do, you break it down into smaller, easy to handle chunks. So you first of all make a list of all the items that stop you being Happy. Things that you will take out of your life. Things that are causing you Unhappiness. Stop worrying, stop mixing with depressing people, stop substance abuse and stop leading such a depressing lifestyle, etc, etc. The list can be as long as you like. Put everything on it. Break some of them into smaller chunks.Make a list of all the depressing people that you want to avoid by name.Make a list of each and every one of the things that you think are causing your depressing lifestyle.Go over the list, make it bigger. And again. This is a journey of self discovery. It could be a turning point in your life. Keep adding to it
2) Keep A Happiness Notebook!
This is a very important part of your plan. It will enable you to know what you are moving away from, what you should be doing right now and where you want to go.It will be a record of how you went from being a deadbeat to a high liver. A lot of very successful people that I have read about and met had this in common. They put a lot of time into keeping a notebook, diary or log. Start today, work on a piece of paper,  buy a notebook tomorrow and start using it. I repeat, start today, work on a piece of paper, buy a notebook tomorrow and start using it. That notebook is like a car, sometimes a bit of a nuisance but that notebook, just like a car, will help you to get to where you want to go, quickly and easily. DO IT!
Happiness Details!
What do you put in your Happiness Notebook?
First you have the list(s) mentioned in 1) above. Then you make a shorter list of all of the items on it that would make important differences in your life. Study them.
4) Nice And Easy Does It!
After studying the list carefully, pick which one of the important ones would be the EASIEST to stick with. Study this list and pick which one of these is the easiest of them to do. This is the one and only one that you will be working on at present. Don’t try to be clever! Chunk this down even more by writing down when, where and how often you will be doing or stopping doing this. Perhaps you can chunk this part down some more i.e just doing it at certain times, in certain places and certain number of times.
Please take note, this is very important, the whole point is to make this part EASY. You must start off at a level that is easy.
If you want to start running marathons, you do not go in for a marathon tomorrow.
You start by running around the block first. Then, as you get stronger…….
Getting a happier lifestyle is a complicated procedure. It shouldn’t be, but sometimes at the beginning, it can be. You must start it off simple and easy. When you have some experience, when you have had some success, then you can go for the big ones! LOL.
Don’t worry, you will have a lot of fun when you get started. Just imagine how much you will have when you are up and running for a while.
Start working on this area NOW! As I said above, start today, work on a piece of paper, buy a notebook tomorrow and start using it.
5) The Next Happiness Target!
Keep working on this area until you think that you have mastered it. Then, and only then, pick the next one of the items on your list that would make important differences in your Happiness. Again look for the easiest to do. Start working with this one.

More Happiness Facts!

Shortly after finishing  writing Get Happiness? Stop Daydreaming! Part 2 (and Part 1), I came across this excellent article (Find links to these in Related Articles section below). This article gives a more realistic view of how long it takes to get really amazing results using Meditation to add to your enjoyment of life, your  Happiness and your health, both mental and physical.
Here are some interesting excerpts in italics and my comments.

Yi-Yuan Tang said that meditation helps the brain stay organized.

Yi-Yuan Tang said that meditation helps the brain stay organized.

What does it take to become a better thinker? Do you need to meditate for hours and engage in gruelling cognitive training? Or could the path to a healthy mind be as simple as walking 40 minutes a day? At a symposium on training, performance, and neuroplasticity at the 24th APS Annual Convention in Chicago, three researchers presented their own methods for improving cognition and for tightening the neural circuits that underlie an efficient mind.

APS Fellow and symposium chair Yi-Yuan Tang, from Texas Tech University, began by discussing his work on integrative body-mind training (IBMT), a meditation technique that he and his colleagues have adapted from traditional Chinese medicine. IBMT combines physical and mental relaxation techniques, “because you really need to train the body to train the mind,” Tang explained. Using detailed fMRI analysis, Tang has been able to pinpoint the neural changes that underlie meditation-induced improvements in mood and cognitive performance.

Me: The Body-Mind connection is at the core of the Taoist and Zen (both words mean Meditation) principles that I use and teach. Tang has used brain scanning to prove this to be true and to show that meditation increases Happiness.

Many studies on the effects of meditation examine lifelong meditators who have thousands of hours of practice under their belts, but Tang found positive effects in students who performed IBMT for less than a week.

Me:- This is what I was seeing on my classes 40 years ago. I wrote this in Get Happiness? Stop Daydreaming! Part 2.

After 20 minutes of meditation a day for five days, the students demonstrated improvements in their conflict-resolution abilities and creative problem solving skills, as well as decreased blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Me:- Which means a reduction in stress.

Tang found that patients who had been practicing IBMT longer (two to four weeks) had increased blood flow to the anterior cingulate cortex and insular striatum, two brain regions associated with self-regulation. Additionally, these brain areas had increased white-to-gray matter ratios, suggesting that the detectable changes associated with meditation might be mediated by increased networking in these areas.

Me:- The researchers I mentioned in parts 1  and 2 were talking about people with thousands of hours of Meditation training/study. At a normal level of 30 minutes a day these researchers were talking about training for about twelve years while waiting for a good result.
The researchers proved lots of good results but were completely adrift in this area. The people whom this research is supposed to help are not looking to learn the Buddhist, Hindu or Sikh religion. They are mostly unhappy, depressed or dysfunctional and are looking for tools of change that work and do not carry lots of baggage. Baggage they do not need or want. This surplus baggage is why they are talking about thousands of hours of training. Not the 2 to 4 weeks of 30 minutes a day that Tang and I are talking about.
Thousands of hours! What an unbelievable waste of time if you are desperate for quick but real results.
Don’t get me wrong. Religion will give some people some help and happiness. But the right type of clean, pure meditation will completely change most people. If you are looking for Happiness that you can use to move your life forward and the strong, agile and flexible mind that will allow you to grow and use that Happiness then you must choose carefully. If you are looking for therapeutic tools of change choose a Meditation that is not a part of a religion.

Me:- There is a vast amount of information in the article, including:

……..changes in brain structure ……….Participants’ brains, in effect, were becoming more organized through meditation.

APS Fellow Randall W. Engle, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, focused on a different method for mental improvement. He developed a cognitive training strategy designed to enhance working memory capacity.

Me:- The more powerful your brain, the better you can use it for Meditation and building Happiness.

Using arduous memory tests (and generous financial compensation),……..Of course, training can have impressive returns, especially when participants are paid for performing better.
……APS Fellow Kramer’s research suggests a physical workout could improve memory. In adults aged 59 to 80, Kramer found that walking 40 minutes a day, three times a week, helped to reverse the effects of age on brain circuits involved in attention and decision making.

Art Kramer found that walking could help reverse the effects of aging.

Art Kramer found that walking could help reverse the effects of aging.
However, the deterioration of these networks might be reversible through exercise. Kramer asked two groups of self-identified “couch potatoes” to spend a year either walking or stretching three times a week and used fMRI to monitor the strength of brain networks at the beginning of the study, after six months, and after a year. The results were promising. The walking group improved their performance on cognitive tasks and increased the strength of certain brain networks, even to the point in which their brains resembled the brains of much younger people. Kramer also observed increases in hippocampus volume, measures of neural organization, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the walking group.

Me:- Great stuff!

The finding that exercise helps cognition is not new, but Kramer’s attention to the strengthening of networks suggests that the effects of exercise might be based in the same decision-making networks that allow us to play video games.

What can we learn from these disparate lines of research? Taken together, they suggest that cognitive training alone isn’t the secret to improving cognitive function. Instead, strengthening the connections between body and mind through meditation and walking may be the key to a better brain.

Me:- Why take chances? Do as I do! Do cognitive exercise ( Crosswords, Sudoku, etc. ), exercise and meditate. And of course, lots of Happiness training!

What Matters in Training?

“Everyone gets training,” says APS Fellow Eduardo Salas, a psychological scientist from the University of Central Florida. “But what matters? What works? What influences learning and skill acquisition?”

Me:- Or what training works and gives improved results? The answer is generative training. Training where the skills you get enable you to train even better. And that better training gives you even better results. You are involved in an upward spiral of more and more improvement (This is an advanced level of NLP). This plan is not infinite. You can’t keep it up for ever. Or can you?
Myself and The Happy People are determined to try! LOL!
